At Katakhali Swapnopuron Welfare Society (KSWS), we support women and adolescent girls from vulnerable communities in the Sundarbans to develop skills, confidence, and sustainable sources of income.
Empowering Women in the Sundarbans
At Katakhali Swapnopuron Welfare Society (KSWS), we believe that empowering women is essential to building resilient communities and creating lasting social change. Through our Women’s Livelihood and Environmental Action initiatives, we support women and adolescent girls from vulnerable communities in the Sundarbans to develop skills, confidence, and sustainable sources of income.
Currently we have 2 livelihood centres in Hingalganj and Pashim Khejurberia, catering to 100+ women of the local community from 2019 till present. Overall, 990+ women have received training through various livelihood programs.
Many of the women who participate in our programmes are the first in their families to access structured vocational training. By combining practical skill development with leadership building, community engagement, and environmental consciousness, we create pathways toward economic independence, dignity, and social participation.
Our approach is rooted in the realities of the Sundarbans, where climate vulnerability, limited livelihood opportunities, and social barriers disproportionately affect women. We work to strengthen their resilience through locally relevant, sustainable, and community-driven livelihood models.

Our work is guided by the principles of inclusion, dignity, sustainability, and empowerment.
We view livelihood development as more than income generation. It is a process through which women gain confidence, build agency, strengthen social networks, and become active contributors to their communities. Through safe and supportive learning spaces, participants develop both technical competencies and life skills that enable them to navigate social and economic challenges.
The programme aligns with the International Labour Organization’s Decent Work Agenda and the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles, ensuring that women are supported through equitable access to skills, leadership opportunities, participation, and economic advancement.
We also believe that sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship must go hand in hand. By encouraging local production systems, responsible resource use, and climate-sensitive livelihood practices, we contribute to building resilient communities in the climate-vulnerable Sundarbans region.

Tailoring and Apparel Production
Our Tailoring and Apparel Production initiative serves as a continuous skill development and production platform where women receive structured training in garment making and apparel finishing.
The programme combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on learning, enabling women to transition from basic stitching skills to production-oriented work.
Participants are trained in:
- Garment cutting and measurement
- Stitching and finishing techniques
- Machine operation and maintenance
- Fabric handling and quality control
- Production planning and teamwork
- Safe workplace practices

Jewellery and Creative Enterprise Development
The Jewellery and Creative Enterprise initiative supports women and adolescent girls in developing handcrafted products that can contribute to entrepreneurship and supplementary income generation.
Through guided practice and creative exploration, participants gain confidence in transforming locally available materials into marketable products.

Women's Livelihood Centre
The Women’s Livelihood Centre functions as a shared learning, production, and community engagement space where women can continue their training, collaborate on production activities, and participate in leadership development initiatives.
More than a training facility, the centre acts as a hub for empowerment, collaboration, and long-term livelihood development.
The centre provides:
- A safe and inclusive learning environment
- Ongoing mentorship and skill enhancement
- Opportunities for collective production – 36 hours/week, 6 hours theoretical and 30 hours practical sessions
- Leadership and community participation platforms
- Peer learning and support networks
Community Exhibitions and Market Linkages
To enhance visibility and market access, women associated with our production house regularly participate in exhibitions, fairs, and community events.
Exhibitions help participants gain recognition for their work while creating pathways toward economic participation and entrepreneurship.

Environmental Sustainability and Climate-Responsive Livelihoods
Living in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions, communities in the Sundarbans face frequent environmental challenges. KSWS integrates environmental awareness and sustainability into its livelihood programming to ensure long-term resilience.
