Why Girl Child Education?
In the remote islands of the Sundarbans, geography, poverty and climate vulnerability can determine how far a child is able to go.
Many families depend on daily wage labour, fishing, agriculture, honey collection and other seasonal livelihoods. Cyclones, floods, changing weather patterns and economic uncertainty can make already fragile household incomes even more difficult to sustain.
For girls, these challenges can become additional barriers to continuing education.
Yet education can change much more than a girl’s ability to read and write.
Education can give her confidence. It can expand her choices. It can delay early marriage. It can help her participate in decisions about her own life. It can help her imagine a future beyond the circumstances she was born into.

What Is “Rakhi for Education”?
The campaign will begin online and culminate in intimate musical evenings hosted in collaboration with cafés and communities in Kolkata
Guests will come together for music, storytelling and cultural performances, while learning about the realities faced by girls in the Sundarbans and discovering how they can contribute to keeping girls in school
The campaign invites people to become a Rakhi Saathi — someone who chooses to stand behind a girl’s educational journey
An Evening of Hope and Empowerment
The campaign’s musical evenings will bring together emerging local artists, storytellers, community members and supporters for an intimate experience centred around education and empowerment.
